What is a Yoga Block and What is its Use?

Posted by Nui Yoga on

Yoga is one of the most effective activities preferred for achieving balance between mind and body. Yoga practice offers many benefits such as increasing flexibility, reducing stress and improving overall health. One of the tools used in this practice process is yoga blocks. So, what is a yoga block and how can it help you in your yoga practice? In this article, we will discuss the basic functions, benefits and correct use of yoga blocks in detail.

What is a Yoga Block?

A yoga block is a rectangular tool, usually made of foam, rubber, wood or cork, used to provide support during yoga practice. These blocks are designed to help balance, align the body and make poses more accessible for those who are not flexible. Using a yoga block also allows for more accurate and deep poses, helping to improve the yoga practitioner's posture and performance.

What is the Use of a Yoga Block?

Yoga blocks are beneficial for both beginners and advanced yogis in a variety of ways. For beginners, yoga blocks allow them to safely try more difficult positions even when their flexibility is not yet sufficient. For example, when bending over, the block provides the necessary support for the hands that cannot fully touch the ground, helping to perform the movement correctly. For advanced users, yoga blocks are used to hold more difficult positions for longer periods of time and to increase the depth of the position. Thanks to these blocks, the body is challenged more, which contributes to increased overall flexibility and strength capacity.

Exercises Using Yoga Blocks

Yoga blocks provide support for both beginners and advanced yoga practitioners in a variety of positions. Blocks make it easier for those with limited flexibility to assume positions safely and correctly. For example, if the hamstrings are being stretched in the 'Paschimottanasana' (Seated Forward Bend), placing the blocks in front of the legs and placing the hands on the blocks allows the body to lie more comfortably and correctly. In addition, in resting positions such as 'Balasana' (Child's Pose), a block placed under the head provides comfortable support for the neck and head, encouraging deep relaxation.

How to Choose the Right Yoga Block?

Choosing a yoga block depends on your personal needs. Blocks are usually made of different materials such as foam, cork, wood or bamboo. Foam blocks are lightweight and inexpensive, but cork, wood and bamboo blocks provide more solid support and may be superior in terms of durability. When making your choice, consider your intended use and what type of block will suit you best. For example, if you are someone who loves to travel, a lightweight foam block may be easier to carry. However, if you are looking for a more rigid and stable support, cork, wood and bamboo blocks may be ideal. The size of the block is also important; you should choose blocks that fit your hand size and how you use them.

Care and Cleaning of Yoga Blocks

Regular maintenance and cleaning is essential to extend the life of your yoga blocks and ensure their hygiene. While foam blocks can usually be wiped down with a damp cloth, it is not recommended to use a damp cloth for cork or bamboo blocks as these materials can absorb moisture. For these types of blocks, a light cleaning with a natural cleaner can be done. Cleaning your block after each use will help prevent bacterial build-up, especially when used in group classes. Storing your blocks in a dry, clean place will help them maintain their shape and add more value to your use in the long run.
